The town of Winterville NC was incorporated in 1897. At that time it was thought to be the "highest point in the county". It was also a well known fact that this area had excellent mineral water and thought to be good for all types of ailments. Winterville was also the first town in Pitt County to have electricity. The use of electricity was limited to evenings only when ironing was done and children did their homework. Households were limited to 25-watt bulbs and charges were based on the number of bulbs a household had. Therefore, some families only used one light bulb and carried it from room to room.
With the availability of electricity, the town quickly gained businesses. Some of the first were: Winterville Cotton Oil Co., Mrs. Braxton's Millinery Shop, a cigar factory, a drug store, automobile dealership introducing the Reo. Others followed including: Beddard's Store, A-.W. Ange & Co., Queenie's Beauty Shop, Weatherington's Market and The Dixie Queen which is still a very popular restaurant featuring fresh local seafood.
Winterville, over the years has gained popularity with it's quaint and friendly small town atmosphere. With a population of around 10,000 and growing, the town still has the feel of a small town. Families take to the area with it's many subdivisions and convenience to shopping, restaurants and medical facilities.
